Drivers License Verification

Motor Vehicle Report/MVR: Drivers License Verification
A Motor Vehicle Report checks the driving record of a potential employee. It verifies that an applicant has the driver's license claimed. It may provide information regarding irresponsible behavior, including whether there is a history of substance abuse, repeated traffic violations, failures to appear, and unpaid fines.

A Motor Vehicle Report is sometimes referred to as a MVR, a Driver's License Verification, or a Driver's License Background Check.
Why Do Motor Vehicle Reports
A Motor Vehicle Report is an essential part of a defense against negligent hiring claims for employees who drive company vehicles or who drive on company business. It verifies that an applicant has the driver's license claimed (license type, current status, standing, and possible restrictions). It may also provide information regarding irresponsible behavior, including substance abuse, repeated traffic violations, failures to appear, and unpaid fines. A Motor Vehicle Report may also provide name and address information that is useful (especially when an applicant is trying to hide something) in the criminal record aspect of a background check.

What are the Sources of a Motor Vehicle Report?
Because Motor Vehicle Licenses are issued by individual states and each state maintains its own database of driving records, no national driving record database exists. We contact the individual Department of Motor Vehicles (or comparable department) in each state.

What are the Weaknesses of a Motor Vehicle Report?
Each state has its own rules and regulations as to how Motor Vehicle Records are kept and released. Additional forms may be required to access these records. Some states do not even permit prospective employers access to Motor Vehicle Reports. Name variations, incorrect or missing license numbers, etc., can also cause records to be overlooked.

How Far Back Does A Motor Vehicle Report Go?
The information reported in a Motor Vehicle Report varies between 3 to 10 years based on the individual state. For a more complete discussion about how far back a background check goes, see How Far Back Does A Background Check Go.

How Long Does a Motor Vehicle Report Take?
Most Motor Vehicle Reports are returned within one to three business days from the order date. However, each state has its own rules and regulations as to how records are kept and released. This affects the turnaround time. Name variations, incorrect or missing license numbers, etc., can also cause delays.

Can I See a Sample Motor Vehicle Report?
Yes, click Sample Motor Vehicle Report.

What is Our Recommendation for Motor Vehicle Reports?
We recommend a Motor Vehicle Report for all employees who drive company vehicles or who will be driving on company business. Note: We only run a Motor Vehicle Report as part of a complete background check and not as a stand-alone search.

Are Motor Vehicle Reports Available Internationally?
Yes, there are a limited number of countries outside the United States where Motor Vehicle Reports are available. For more information, click International Driving Record Search.
